What is NAD+ and why does it decline?
NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a coenzyme present in every living cell. It's essential for converting food into cellular energy, repairing damaged DNA, activating sirtuins (longevity proteins), and regulating your circadian rhythm.
NAD+ levels peak in your 20s and decline steadily thereafter. By age 40, most people have lost over 50% of their peak NAD+. By 60, levels can drop to 25% or less. This decline is accelerated by chronic stress, poor sleep, alcohol consumption, and sedentary behavior.
For women, the menopause transition compounds NAD+ decline with falling estrogen and progesterone, creating a double hit to energy production, cognitive function, and cellular repair mechanisms.
